Barely steps out of the Bahia Principe La Romana resort, lies La Romana, the seventh largest city in the Dominican Republic and a Caribbean oasis that sits close to many local attractions. And for that reason we leave you seven interesting facts about the destination.

Its location

Home of many professionals of the tourism industry, La Romana is conveniently located in the center of the southeast of the island. This makes it equally close to Santo Domingo as it is to La Altagracia, the province where Punta Cana, Bavaro and Macao are located.

Its name

The name of the province is the same of the main municipality, and it derives from the balance that was used to weigh export goods.

Its attractions

La Romana is also known for hosting Casa de Campo, one of the Caribbean’s most ambitious developments and top golfing destination. Visit Casa de Campo for a tour of Altos de Chavon, a replica of a medieval Mediterranean villa that features a Greek amphitheater, complete with a church and cobblestone streets. Altos de Chavon is a popular attraction in La Romana, next to La Cueva de las Maravillas, the Cotubanama National Park and its islands: Saona and Catalina.

The southeastern province is the home of high profile stars such as Marc Anthony, Beyonce, Julio Iglesias and Rafa Nadal. Additionally, celebrities such as Sting, Placido Domingo, Elton John, Gloria Estefan, Andrea Bocelli and Frank Sinatra have performed in Altos de Chavon.

Sugar

Did you know that La Romana used to be an oil town? Quality of life of its inhabitants greatly improved after the immigration of Italian families which quickly turned the economy to sugar production. The Italians commissioned a mill to extract the sugar from the sugar cane. This along an increasing demand for sugar turned the town into the headquarters of the largest sugar production of the Americas. This economy would eventually lead to other Dominican families to move to La Romana and to the interest of foreign investment in the province, its renovation and expansion, including Casa de Campo. Next to the tourism industry, sugar production continues to be part of the local economy.

Its nature

La Romana features one of the most diverse ecosystems of the country, being gateway to Saona and Catalina islands. These two are part of the Cotubanama National Park, also known as “Parque Nacional del Este”. Underwater caves, over 500 species of flora and more than 200 types of birds, untouched beaches of white powdery sands, trails that attracts all types of adventurers, coral reefs and turtle sightings.
